Community size in relation to self governance
Overview
The goal of Izara Community is to create large scale self governance based on direct democracy as an alternative to existing power structures that govern large populations.
Effective direct democracy on a large scale has never been tested, smaller scale implementations have, such as co-ops and other community organizations.
self governance with a small community is different to that of a large population, biases, personal relationships, greed and loyalty manifest in small groups.
At a large scale social level morality will start to apply, where the selfish desires of groups are diluted by the larger majority, any attempt at evil behavior by any group will hopefully be mitigated by the population.
Izara Communities will most likely begin small and will suffer from the dangers of small self governed groups, for this reason it might make sense for a new community to implement a quorum minimum number of members, or perhaps a specific representation of segments in society, before allowing pure direct democracy to control all decisions.
Methods to accomplish this is to have a benevolent dictator or council who can override communal voting, this creates a concentration of power and protections should be in place for this, such as a clearly defined transition to self governance and strong transparency requirements of people in that position.
In addition Izara Communities should implement relatively easy methods for members to leave a community, if people in initial positions of power abuse their position members should be able to leave and create a new community, offering another layer of protection.
